About Northwinds Jacobs

Located in beautiful southeastern Minnesota in the picturesque Upper Mississippi watershed, our farm has been raising the rare and majestic Jacob sheep since 2007. The appeal of Jacobs for many is the shear aesthetic impact of seeing these unusually alert, primitive and multicolored, multihorned animals in their pasture. For others, the conservancy of rare breeds is the most satisfying consideration.  Jacobs are valuable as a reservoir of many genetic traits that have been bred out of commercial breeds. In addition, they have proven valuable in scientific research on the genetic origins of Tay Sachs disease in humans.  However, many fiber enthusiasts are aware that American Jacobs sheep fleeces are one of the softest, most amazing fibers for hand spinning, creating fabrics that are lightweight, next-to-the-skin comfortable, drapey and warm.

NorthWinds Jacobs offers JSBA registered breeding stock for sale as well as raw or washed fleeces, roving and yarn in various shades, core-spun and pelts as available. It is our intention to establish a self-sustaining enterprise that preserves and promotes the diversity of genetics in this rare primitive breed. We are members of The Livestock Conservancy and participate in the Shave 'Em to Save 'Em program.
